Energy_rip_offBill 14, Door-to-Door Sales Prohibition Act, 2016. This Bill sailed through First Reading on September 15, 2016 and if passed, will make it against the law to sell Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) door-to-door. Let’s hope it sails into law sooner rather than later so these con-artists can be penalized for showing up at your door and applying very high-pressure tactics to get into your home.

Like most predators, they target seniors and those who are already underprivileged. This Bill sets up a Provincial Offence where the perpetrators can be charged $500 for the person and $5,000 for a corporation on a first offence. This escalates to $2,000 and $25,000 for three or more offences. Interestingly, the Bill proposes that the victim can not only void the contract but also initiate an action for twice the value of the contract if they wish to do so.
